Professional Organizations

Professional Organizations are useful resources for professionals in any industry. They are created to advocate for their industry’s best interests and they help members stay updated on the latest practices in their field. It is also great for networking and connecting with other members of your industry.

PEN America advocates for the freedom to write and the ability to access the views and ideas of others. Membership includes novelists, journalists, nonfiction writers, editors, poets, essayists, playwrights, publishers, translators, agents, and others who are involved in the writing and reading communities. A few notable members (past or present) include:

  • Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie,

  • Maya Angelou, and

  • Langston Hughes.

As a member, you can get involved with advocacy programs, attend member-exclusive events, be a part of a community of lovers of words, and have access to other benefits. Annual membership costs

  • $125 for a professional membership (published writers, editors, screenwriters, etc.)

  • $50 for a reader membership
